Blackboard 9 is my learning management system and I uploaded a SoftChalk lesson as SCORM 2004. On rare occassions in the Grade Center, I see a green exclamation point rather than a grade for a student. What is happening?

There is an issue with Blackboard 9 and SCORM 2004 that causes this exclamation point to appear (see below).

When a student closes a SoftChalk lesson (uploaded as SCORM 2004) AND has NOT completed an item to get a score (in effect a NULL score), then the following happens.

The Grade Center shows a green exclamation point (actually a green background with a white exclamanation point) for the null grade. If the student goes back to take the lesson and DOES complete items for a score, the green exclamation point still remains in the Grade Center. (If you view these later attempts with the View grade details option, the scores for later attempts do appear. The instructor can change the grade manually.)

If the student completes an item and gets a 0 score, then a 0 score appears in the Grade Center correctly.

The above issue is a Blackboard issue. (For example when a lesson is uploaded as SCORM 1.2, a zero appears for a null grade rather than the green exclamation point). However, SoftChalk may be able to produce a workaround in a later update of LessonBuilder. We will keep you posted.

We would still recommend the use of SCORM 2004 because it works with Firefox on both the Mac and PC whereas SCORM 1.2 ONLY works on Internet Explorer on the PC in Blackboard. Also as mentioned above, the instructor can change the grade manually for the green exclamation point.

Vista is my operating system. Within SoftChalk, I enter the license key and get the message, "License cannot be set. Please log in as Administrator to enter the license information." What should I do?

In order for SoftChalk to save the license, you need to have administrator rights. (A check would be to see if you can save a text file to C:\Program Files.)

If you have administrator rights and are still having problems getting the license key to be saved (or getting an update), you may need to turn off the User Account Control (see below).

STEPS

From your desktop, click on the round Start button and select Control Panel.

	Select User accounts.

Click on Turn User Account Control on or off.

	De-select the checkbox.

	Click OK.

	Re-start your computer.

	Start LessonBuilder.

Choose Help/Enter License and enter your license.

If you would like, you can turn the User Account Control back on (see steps #1-3 above).

How do I incorporate my Camtasia video into a lesson?

With Camtasia Studio 5 when you create a video, you produce one .swf file. You can insert this .swf file into your lesson using one of the methods below:

Choose Insert/Media. Select Flash. Click Select file and select the .swf file and click Select. (You may need to add values for the width and height.) Click OK.

Select some text. Right-click and choose Hyperlink. Click Select file and select the .swf file and click Select. Select Open in a new window. Click OK.

If you have interactivity with your video (or want to constrain the size of the video), you may want to use the method below:
Let's say you have two Camtasia videos.

The first produced Camtasia video is in a folder called test1 which includes the following files:
test1.html
test1.swf
ProductionInfo.xml
swfobject.js

The second produced Camtasia video is in a folder called test2 which includes the following files:
test2.html
test2.swf
ProductionInfo.xml
swfobject.js

STEPS:

Create a SoftChalk lesson called tutorials.

Quit SoftChalk.

Copy the above two folders (test1 and test2) into your tutorials lesson folder.

Start SoftChalk and open your tutorials lesson.

Type Test1 Video and select this text.

Right-click and choose Hyperlink.

In the URL box, type test1/test1.html.

Repeat the same process for the Test2 video using test2/test2.html for the URL.

FYI, with SoftChalk Versions 4 and higher, when you package your lesson, all the folders inside the lesson become part of the zip file.

How do I enter my license key? My Free Trial version of SoftChalk LessonBuilder has expired!

Even if your Free Trial version of LessonBuilder has expired, you can open LessonBuilder to enter a license key.

STEPS

Start LessonBuilder. Go to the top menu and choose Help/Enter License. (If you have a Macintosh and you are using Version 5 (or Version 4), look at the top left of your screen and choose File/Enter License.)

Copy and paste your License Name and License Key exactly as provided to you. (You may make an error if you try to type the information.)

If you have Version 5, you need to complete the User Information as well.

If you have trouble entering your license, see the FAQ When I try to enter my license key, I get the message, "My name is missing the first dash." What should I do?
