From the Chief Chalkie - August Highlights

Hi Chalkies! Just in case you needed yet another reminder... it's officially back to school time! Although it's sad to see summer come to an end, it's also exciting to get geared up for the new school year. You've probably picked up a few new ideas or tools that you plan to implement in your classes this year. Maybe you're even planning to "Flip your Classroom" like the educators featured in our last Innovator webinar - which had over 550 people registered to attend! If you are, definitely check out the recorded session to see how SoftChalk can help make the flip a little easier.

Just in case none of the above has you jazzed about the beginning of the school year, we have something that might help! This fall we're hosting a five week series that will explore online, blended and face to face teaching and learning. Each Friday from September 7 through October 5 we will examine the many issues surrounding teaching in these environments through the experiences of educators who have done it all. Topics range from institutional concerns to learning style issues to personal experiences to hard data comparisons. Get more information on the first session below and then head over to our website to register for the full series.

Also in this newsletter, we have some great stories about how SoftChalk Cloud is saving schools money and enabling the delivery of content across multiple LMS platforms. In addition, we have an exciting award announcement and links to new support and training materials for those of you who recently migrated or are thinking about transitioning to SoftChalk Cloud. Scroll down to learn more.

Connecting New Jersey's Community Colleges through Public Health Education

At the request of the New Jersey Public Health Training Center, Dr. Jim Brown designed an online "Introduction to Public Health" course for New Jersey community college students. The interactive course covered public health topics from disease prevention to epidemiology, addressing a key goal of the course's main sponsor, the (NJPHTC): to introduce and expose more students to the field of public health.

Public Health Lesson

However, Dr. Brown couldn't quite meet that goal without reaching more of New Jersey's community college students. Statewide adoption was slow, though the course was well-received at Kean University where Dr. Brown teaches as an adjunct. How could he easily reach 19 community colleges, with varying LMS, programs and student bodies?

That's where SoftChalk Cloud, the new Cloud-based content authoring system and learning object repository comes in. "It solved a huge problem for New Jersey's 19 community colleges," says Dr. Brown. "When I saw [the SoftChalk Cloud announcement], that immediately became clear."

Read the full case study to learn how Dr. Brown leveraged SoftChalk Cloud to deliver his Public Health course across the state of New Jersey.

EducationSuperHighway—National School Broadband Test for K-12 Schools

On September 10th, the non-profit organization EducationSuperHighway will launch a National School Broadband Test in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education to take an inventory of the state of Internet access in America's K-12 schools. Their objective is to collect 1 million data points (10 per school) on the ACTUAL performance of the Internet in our classrooms and school libraries. The information gathered will be used to raise awareness of the need to upgrade the Internet access in our schools as a prerequisite to digital learning. It will also help guide the allocation of $2.5 billion in annual funding for school Internet access upgrades. Help upgrade your school's Internet access by asking ten of your colleagues or students to take one minute to go to www.SchoolSpeedTest.org from a computer or wireless device connected to your school's network.
