From the Chief Chalkie - July Highlights

Hi Chalkies! Hopefully your summer is off to a great start. We've been quite busy here with the release of SoftChalk Cloud, our new platform for creating, managing and delivering content! Hopefully you've had a chance to check it out already, but if for some reason you haven't, you can still learn more about it by attending one of our upcoming intro webinars.

In other news, we have a great Innovators session coming up next week that will feature UT Tyler's Emergency Care Training website, which was created with SoftChalk; a case study that describes one virtual school's success using SoftChalk, new blog posts to share and an update from our support team. Scroll down to learn more.

Innovators Session - UT Tyler's Emergency Care Training website, built with SoftChalk, Helps Hurricane Victims

The "Just in Time Medical Special Needs Shelter Training" module encompasses knowledge needed by nursing faculty and students, physicians, medical and non-medical volunteers as they work together to set up emergency shelters and meet medical needs of displaced populations. The University of Texas at Tyler has been named a 2012 Laureate by IDG's Computerworld Honors Program for the training module website and as part of this effort the university has been able to provide disaster sheltering efforts and provided volunteers for hurricane relief.

Attend this session and learn how project developers used SoftChalk to create and organize media rich content in a user-friendly format. The videos, graphics, and quizzes helped to engage the learner and facilitate comprehension and retention of the material.

Presenters: Cindy Smith, Director of Instructional Design, Jana Brown, Instructional Designer, Gina Parkins, Web Technician (The Office of Academic Affairs, The University of Texas at Tyler)

Best Practices in Online Learning

A recent Time magazine article, “The Teacher You’ve Never Met: Inside an Online High School Class,” profiled Jane Good, one of Colorado’s 21st Century Virtual Academy K-12 teachers. As a teacher who only sees her students’ hands raised through buttons clicked on a screen and will never be able to tell if a student has dozed off on his or her desk, Good realizes that there are effective and ineffective practices for teaching in an online classroom. David Evans, an online learning expert here at SoftChalk, completely agrees with this teaching practice .He suggested, "Teachers cannot just post a lesson and clock out for the day. They need to work with their students through frequent conversation."

Evans also points out that teachers need to create technical foundation to allow for the most successful online learning environment. Follow his three best practices for creating concise, direct and attractive lessons.

A Portable Solution for a Portable School: Georgia Virtual School and SoftChalk

By making SoftChalk an integral part of their course creation tools, GAVS saves time and allows instructors to focus on their students. GAVS's team of developers craft the courses for this program using SoftChalk, with each course using 8-18 SoftChalk modules. By creating courses in SoftChalk instead of their learning management system, GAVS developers know that their course materials have a life beyond one student, classroom or school year.
